  • AN EVALUATION OF AOA'S PROGRAM TO PREVENT ELDER ABUSE: FINAL REPORT
    • ASPE is going to release an evaluation of AoA's Program to Prevent Elder Abuse. In 2012, AoA awarded 5 cooperative agreements to test elder abuse prevention interventions. The interventions were diverse and focused on different types of abuse (e.g., self-neglect, financial exploitation, physical and emotional abuse) at different points of prevention (e.g., primary and secondary prevention) in different settings (e.g., at home, in healthcare settings). This report presents detailed information on the implementation of AoA's Program to Prevent Elder Abuse including the infrastructure in which the interventions were implemented, target populations, core components, and facilitators and barriers to implementation. A striking finding was that self-neglect was the most common type of abuse experienced and co-occurred with all forms of abuse, reinforcing that elder self-neglect is a serious public health problem and a prevalent concern for APS. Financial exploitation co-occurred with other forms of abuse. Many elders served by the preventions interventions experienced more than 1 type of abuse. Thus, elders participating in the prevention intervention had multiple service needs. This report will be posted on the ASPE website by the end of April 2018.
