Advisory Council on Alzheimer's Research, Care, and Services Meetings

The Advisory Council on Alzheimer's Research, Care, and Services meets quarterly to discuss programs that impact people with Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (AD/ADRD) and their caregivers. Representatives from agency and organizations that work with dementia treatment and care are invited to present information to the Advisory Council. The public is also given time at each meeting to provide first-hand information of their day-to-day experience.

This section provides the information available for each Advisory Council meeting.

2018 Meetings

April 27, 2018 -- Advisory Council Meeting #28

The meeting was held on Friday, April 27, 2018, in Washington, DC. During the meeting, the Clinical Care Subcommittee took charge of the theme, focusing on advancing consensus on dementia care elements to guide new outcomes measurement. The Council heard speakers in two sessions, one focused on developing consensus about dementia care elements, and the second on models that are informing outcomes measurement. The meeting also included updates on work from the previous meetings, a presentation on the final report from the October 2017 Care Summit, and federal workgroup updates. January 26, 2018 -- Advisory Council Meeting #27

The meeting was held on Friday, January 26, 2018, in Washington, DC. The Research Subcommittee took charge of this meeting's theme, focusing on the process from targets to treatments. The Council heard speakers on the preclinical pipeline, the clinical trial pipeline, and the industry perspective. The meeting also included discussion of a driver diagram to guide the Council's future work, updates and a report from the October Care Summit, and federal workgroup updates. 2017 Meetings

October 27, 2017 -- Advisory Council Meeting #26

The meeting was held on Friday, October 27, 2017, in Washington, DC. The Advisory Council welcomed its new members and invited them to share their experiences and where they see the Council going over the length of their terms. The Advisory Council also spent some time discussing the process of developing recommendations and how those recommendations relate to the National Plan. The Council then spent much of the meeting discussing the National Research Summit on Care, Services, and Supports for Persons with Dementia and Their Caregivers, held on October 16-17. July 28, 2017 -- Advisory Council Meeting #25

The meeting was held on Friday, July 28, 2017, in Washington, DC. The Advisory Council spent the morning discussing information gaps across the three areas of research, clinical care, and long-term services and supports. There was also a presentation on the recently released National Academy of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) report on preventing cognitive decline. Additional presentations included a presentation on planning and progress towards the October Care and Services Summit and federal workgroup updates. October 31, 2016 -- Advisory Council Meeting #22

The meeting was held on Monday, October 31, 2016, in Washington, DC. The theme of this Advisory Council meeting was on racial and ethnic disparities in research and care for dementia. Presentations focused on general demographics, gaps and barriers that various groups face in obtaining services, and successful interventions to reduce these gaps. January 25, 2016 -- Advisory Council Meeting #19

The meeting was held on Monday, January 25, 2016. [Due to a snowstorm in the DC area, all government buildings were closed the day of the meeting. A WebEx meeting was set up beforehand to accommodate the discussion, and Listserv members were alerted on how to register.] The Advisory Council reviewed the process for developing both the recommendations and the National Plan to Address Alzheimer's Disease, discussed updates to work on Goals 2 and 3 of the National Plan, and heard updates on a future summit on care. October 26, 2015 -- Advisory Council Meeting #18

The meeting was held on Monday, October 26, 2015, in Washington, D.C. The Advisory Council welcomed its new members and invited them to share their experiences and where they see the Advisory Council going over the length of their terms. The Advisory Council also spent some time discussing the process of developing recommendations and how those recommendations relate to the National Plan. July 27, 2015 -- Advisory Council Meeting #17

The meeting was held on Monday, July 27, 2015, in Washington, D.C. The Advisory Council heard from experts on related dementias, such as Frontotemporal dementia, Lewy Body dementia, and others. Following that session, the Advisory Council held a discussion of the expected bypass budget from NIA, required in the CRomnibus Bill. April 28, 2015 -- Advisory Council Meeting #16

The meeting was held on Tuesday, April 28, 2015, in Washington, D.C. The Advisory Council built on the goals of the White House Conference on Aging (WHCOA) through a half-day session with dementia-focused panels on each WHCOA topic area: healthy aging, long-term services and supports, retirement security, and elder justice. Following this session, the Advisory Council held a brief discussion on the 2015 Update to the National Plan, including subcommittee updates, and a discussion of international events on dementia. January 26, 2015 -- Advisory Council Meeting #15

The meeting was held on Monday, January 26, 2015, in Washington, D.C. The Advisory Council heard a presentation on IOM's final expert panel on Advanced Dementia, which will provide additional recommendations for the Council to consider. The Advisory Council spent the majority of the meeting reviewing the work accomplished thus far towards the 2025 goals, and heard presentations from the subcommittees (Research, Clinical Care, Long-Term Services and Supports, and Ethics) for updates to the 2015 National Plan. October 27, 2014 -- Advisory Council Meeting #14

The meeting was held on Monday, October 27, 2014, in Washington, DC. The Advisory Council heard presentations on the basics of long-term care, including presentations on programs, settings, and payers. The meeting was held on Monday, July 21, 2014, in Washington, D.C. 20201. The Advisory Council reviewed and discussed its recommendations on informal caregiving, heard presentations on statistics about caregivers and existing programs to provide them with help, and heard presentations from the subcommittees (Research, Clinical Care, Long-Term Services and Supports, and Ethics). April 29, 2013 -- Advisory Council Meeting #8

The meeting was held on Monday, April 29, 2013, in Washington, DC. The Advisory Council will hear presentations from international partners on their efforts to address Alzheimer's disease. There will also be a presentation on the priorities set during the May 2012 research summit and the milestones for achieving the 2025 goal. The federal partners will provide an update on the progress of implementing the National Plan to Address Alzheimer's Disease, and will discuss highlights of the 2013 National Plan Update. January 14, 2013 -- Advisory Council Meeting #7

The meeting was held on Monday, January 14, 2013, in Washington, DC. The Advisory Council heard updates from the three subgroups on the implementation of the National Plan, as well as a presentation on work underway by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs to support Veterans with Alzheimer's disease and their caregivers. The meeting was held on Tuesday, January 17, 2012, and Wednesday, January 18, 2012, in Washington, D.C. The Advisory Council heard an overview of the Draft National Plan to Address Alzheimer's Disease.
