National Plan to Address Alzheimer's Disease
The National Plan guides coordinated action across the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and other federal agencies to reduce the burden of dementia and improve care and support for people living with dementia and their families.
The 2026 Update sets a vision for the next decade. Its updated title makes the Plan’s longstanding focus on related dementias more explicit, and its new framework organizes federal efforts around four goals:
- Promote Dementia Risk Reduction Across the Lifespan.
- Accelerate Discovery and Innovation to Prevent and Treat Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Dementias.
- Advance High-Value Dementia Care Across the Care Journey.
- Strengthen Evidence-Based Services and Supports for People Living with Dementia and Their Families.
Research and translation into practice support all four goals, connecting scientific progress with public health action, clinical care, and services and supports.
First released in 2012, the National Plan previously organized federal work around six goals addressing prevention and treatment, care quality, family supports, public awareness, data, and risk reduction. Earlier updates provide a record of federal activities and progress. Below are a list of pages celebrating how far federal agencies have come in the past several years, in addition to the original National Plan and the yearly updates.

National Plan 2026 Update
The 2026 Update uses a shorter, more accessible format to highlight major federal accomplishments in 2026 and priority activities planned for 2027. To inform the 2026 Update, HHS provided opportunities for public input through listening sessions and a Request for Information (RFI). These opportunities invited input from people living with Alzheimer's disease and other dementias, family members, caregivers and care partners, researchers, clinicians, service providers, advocates, policymakers, and other interested stakeholders to help inform the comprehensive update to the National Plan.
