This article compares the organization and financing of long-term care for the elderly in the U.S. with that of other advanced industrial countries. While the article is based largely on the author's own research, including studies carried out from 1983 to 1986 under the auspices of the International Social Security Association and during 1987 and 1988 for the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), it also draws on recent studies by other researchers.
