This paper describes research to estimate the rates of nursing home admissions and to identify the determinants of long and short stays in nursing homes. The research employed data available from the 1982 and 1984 National Long-Term Care Surveys. Hence, the results are both nationally representative and indicative of nursing home use patterns by the disabled elderly population. The information presented has implications for public and private long-term care policies. [27 PDF pages]
