This literature review first summarizes the current knowledge of physician practice in nursing homes and identifies gaps in the knowledge base. It then presents the physician practice models applied in nursing homes, including integrated and managed care delivery models, and describes the characteristics of physicians who practice in nursing homes. After describing the current state of nursing home practice, as found in the literature, factors that determine physicians' choice to practice in a nursing home and factors that affect the quality of physician care within a nursing home is presented. The expert opinions offered during a Technical Advisory Group meeting that was conducted as an objective of this project are incorporated to substantiate or expand on the literature findings.
