This report examined the current state of graduate medical education (GME) in the United States. It compiled quantitative data on the financing of GME and the demographics of the resident population. Based on site visits to five academic medical centers, the report also described the system of GME financing, administration, and oversight from the perspective of the institutions that train medical residents. The report also examined Medicare's role in supporting GME.
