Don E. Detmer, MD MA
Don
E. Detmer, MD MA, has
been the Dennis Gillings Professor of Health
Management and Director of Cambridge University Health at the Business School in Cambridge since
1999. He is also Professor Emeritus and Professor of Medical Education at
the University of Virginia.
Currently, he is a board member of Quality and Safety in Health Care, the
Nuffield Trust of London, the China
Medical Board of New York, Inc. and the membership committee of the Institute of Medicine of the
National Academies (US). He is a
lifetime Associate of the National Academies, and a fellow of
AAAS, Academy Health, and the American Colleges of Medical
Informatics, Surgeons, and Sports Medicine. His education included a
medical degree from the University of Kansas and subsequent
training at the National Institutes of Health, the Johns Hopkins Hospital, Duke University Medical Center, the Institute of Medicine, and Harvard Business School. Prior
to coming to England, he was Vice President for Health Sciences at the
Universities of Virginia or Utah and on the faculty at the University of
Wisconsin-Madison. He is immediate past
chairman of the Board on Health Care Services of the IOM and the NCVHS
and has also chaired the Board of Regents of the National Library of Medicine. Detmer's career includes innovative work in national health
information policy, quality improvement, vascular surgery, sports medicine, and
master's level educational programs for clinician-executives.
