Psychiatric Boarding Interview Summary

ASPE contracted with The Lewin Group to conduct interviews regarding boarding of psychiatric patients in the Emergency Department (ED). The goal of the interviews was to gain the perspective of ED Directors/ED Physicians, Department of Psychiatry Chairs/on-call Psychiatrists, and Nurse Case Managers/Social Workers in nine hospitals. Where possible, The Lewin Group also interviewed community stakeholders of the hospitals. These stakeholders were from community mental health centers, state facilities, and state mental health departments. This paper is a summary of the 28 interviews. [20 PDF pages]
