An Exploratory Study of Certified Nursing Assistants' Intent to Leave

Publication Date

High nursing assistant turnover is disruptive to quality of care and is costly. Findings from the first national probability survey of nursing assistants in nursing homes document the magnitude of potential turnover. In 2004, 45% of nursing assistants reported they were very or somewhat likely to leave their job in the next year, 24% were actively looking for another job, and 18% were extremely or somewhat dissatisfied with their job. Intent to leave was associated with job satisfaction, demographics, job experience, commitment to the field, and commitment to the job. This exploratory study underscores the importance of supervision, pay and benefits, and the work environment, suggesting that strategies for stabilizing the nursing assistant workforce address these issues.
