FY 2003 Priorities

NATIONAL FAMILY CAREGIVER SUPPORT PROGRAM (AoA)

Demonstration: The 2000 amendments to the Older Americans Act established a new program to support family caregivers. There are approximately 7 million informal caregivers, such as spouses and adult children, helping 95 percent of disabled older persons who need help in the community. Priorities include:

Competitive Grants, Demonstrations, and Research – Competitive innovation grants to develop new approaches to specialized caregiving issues, demonstrations, and applied research.

Evaluation:

Activities of National Significance – National activities to support program evaluation to understand the effectiveness of programs to support caregivers, such as assistance to families in locating services, caregiver counseling, and respite care.
