Brain Health As You Age: You Can Make a Difference!
- Brain Health Resource made available online June 25 with press releases from each collaborating agency.
- ACL, NIA, and CDC are all doing active outreach through their networks.
- Outreach is underway with the Aging, Public Health and Research networks through newsletters, partnerships, presentations etc.
NIA, CMS & VA Resources for Caregivers
- Long-Distance Caregiving: Getting Started and Long-Distance Caregiving: A Family Affair, two new online-only tip sheets from NIA, offer helpful tips about:
- Supporting an aging family member or friend when you don't live nearby
- Relieving responsibilities of a local caregiver
- Working with your family to assign tasks based on each other's strengths
- CMS Caregiver website addressing multiple planning and resource issues
- VA Caregiver Support Website & VA Caregiver Support Line: 1-855-260-3274
- Additional resources include in-person classes, workbooks, online classes; as well as mechanisms to train VA healthcare professionals to provide caregiver support in person and via telephone and other telehealth modalities.
AHRQ & HRSA Grants
- 5-year demonstration study of “e-Neighbor” a home-based sensor-based technology for persons with ADRD. Study will look at impact on caregiver quality of life, outcomes of persons with ADRD, and s health services utilization.
- Small research grant to study cultural and health system barriers and facilitators of help-seeking intentions of Korean--American caregivers of persons with ADRD.
- HRSA's New Jersey Geriatric Education Center will expand and modify the dementia modules they developed for the state for the national ADRC network.
ACL Opportunities
- ADSSP grants to states for dementia capability application period closed June 11 and applications are being reviewed. Awards will occur around September 1.
- ADI-SSS Funding Opportunity Announcement is available as of July 7 and applications are due on August 6. Designed to fill gaps in dementia-capable long term services and supports.
- Provision of effective supportive services to persons living alone with ADRD in the community.
- Improvement of the quality and effectiveness of programs and services dedicated to individuals aging with intellectual and developmental disabilities with ADRD or those at high risk of developing ADRD.
- Delivery of behavioral symptom management training and expert consultation for family caregivers.
- Evidence-Based Falls Prevention Program funding for States and Federally Recognized Tribes and Tribal Organizations designed to:
- Increase the number of older adults, American Indian, Alaskan Native and Native Hawaiian elders, and adults with disabilities at risk for falls participating in evidence-based community programs to reduce falls and falls risk;
- Increase sustainability of these programs through innovative financing arrangements.
- Target Population: older adults, people with disabilities at risk for falls, and their caregivers residing in the community, home-bound and/or in care settings.
- Applications were due July 8.
- Three ADSSP webinars:
- Elder Abuse and Neglect of Persons with Dementia- What We Know and Where We Are Going
- Preferences for Care and Lifestyle as Expressed by Persons with Dementia.
- Strategies for Reaching Diverse Populations with Dementia
REACH VA into Indian Country
- Successful pilot with Public Health Nurses / Community Health Nurses in 3 Tribal Communities (two IHS direct and one Tribal)
- Will be introduced to Tribal Aging Network at AoA Title VI Training & Technical Assistance Conference with training in the model -- August 18.
- Partnership with the Univ of TN in grant proposal to private foundation for adaptation and expansion to 50 Tribal communities (pending).
