4. Program Objectives: To develop specialized professional and paraprofessional personnel in the occupational safety and health field with training in occupational medicine, occupational health nursing, industrial hygiene, occupational safety, and closely- related disciplines.
5. Titles and Descriptions of at least Three Funded Grantees:
Training grants are available in two forms: Education and Research Centers (ERCs) and Long Term Training Project Grants (TPGs). ERCs provide multidisciplinary academic and research training for students in the core program areas of occupational medicine, industrial hygiene, occupational health nursing and occupational safety, primarily at the graduate level and in related disciplines, such as ergonomics and occupational epidemiology. ERCs also provide continuing education to professionals in the region and outreach programs to other educational institutions and to the public and private sector. TPGs provide undergraduate and graduate training for specialists in the occupational safety and health field and technical training in specialized areas for paraprofessionals.
Examples: 1.) South Florida Education and Research Center- provides academic and research training for occupational physicians, occupational health nurses and industrial hygienists. Continuing education and outreach are also carried out in the region.
2.) Harvard University- conducts graduate and research training in occupational medicine, industrial hygiene and nursing, continuing education programs and a Visiting Scholars Program in the region.
3.) Emory University Training Project Grant- conducts a residency program in occupational medicine and graduate level training in occupational epidemiology.

6. Authorizing Statute (s): Public Health Service Act, Sections 301, 311 and 327, Public Law 78-40, 42 U.S.C. 241d and 241g, as amended, Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970, Section 21, Public Law 91-596, 29 U.S.C. 670a.

Regulatory/Administrative Requirements: Eligible applicants include any public or private educational or training agency or institution that has demonstrated competency in the occupational safety and health field and is located in a State, the District of Columbia, or U.S. Territory is eligible to apply for a training grant.
8. Mandatory Statutory Changes Needed to Operate PSFA as a Demonstration: Authority would need to modify the grant making process, enable the Department to make self-governance funding awards, and alter federal monitoringing mandates.
